“Turn Around Sidepiece”

ABOUT THE WORK

Sidepiece (n.): an object at the sidelines of history, off to the side of the bar, and on the other side of the tracks; although used and discarded, this object is fully aware of her condition.

I conceal my face as I move atop a spinning marble bed in the Vermont woods. With some variation, the gestures and positions reference those truly canonized as sidepieces throughout the history of art: the subjects of nude art paintings of the 20th century by Gauguin, Manet, and Bouguereau. The video also stages the difference between naked bodies in motion (nakedness) as opposed to nude bodies that do not move (nudity), the latter acknowledged as the respectable standard for a nude while the former viewed as a provocative state of being naked.
