ABOUT THE WORK

Anchored in an artistic study of Sheree Rose and Bob Flanagan collections at the ONE archives at the USC libraries, Ibarra created a series of sculptures that combine the aesthetics of hardware catalogues and pornography magazines. These pierced genital silicone sculptures clamped onto various colorful vices draw inspiration from the golden decade of modern piercing and S&M communities on the West Coast in the 1990s.

Bob Flanagan on piercing via The book of Medicine, Los Angeles (1991)

“Human Flesh is as tough as nails, and theres a voice in the back of the brains that screams “What the fuck are you doing? But I say Fuck off as I play cupid to my stupid love sick dick, each fiery pin prick another shot of adrenalin coursing through the veins of my porcupine pal, thick and purple, bobbing in from me like a festive party balloon just begging to be popped.”

A huge thank you to Johnny Galvan Studio for studio assistance.
